Dermal Fillers
A 2018 article published in the JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery said that the demand to look good in the “era of filtered photographs” has increased the interest in cosmetic procedures. “Using filters and editing apps change how people look quickly, and these changes can quickly become a trend, which leaves people with an altered perception of what beauty is,” said Dr. Bill Johnson, a Dallas, Texas, cosmetic physician. More people of all ages are turning to cosmetic procedures as there’s less stigma associated with surgeries and injections every year. This has been fueled by more celebrities publicly talking about the procedures they’ve had. “When a celebrity talks, posts or tweets about the surgeries or minimally invasive procedures they’ve had, their followers see it and want to have similar services,” Johnson said. Some individuals even turn to social media during and after their surgeries. “Talking about procedures is definitely less taboo than in years past,” Johnson said.
In 2018, Botox reigned supreme as the most in-demand cosmetic procedure in the U.S. Other minimally invasive or noninvasive treatments that were popular included chemical peels, soft tissue fillers, and microdermabrasion, a procedure that resurfaces the skin to remove scars, fine lines and other mild to moderate signs of aging. Although the number of procedures in these categories did not increase drastically from 2017 to 2018, and some of these procedures actually dropped in number, overall there has been a significant leap in the total number of cosmetic procedures since 2000. Just one snapshot in the increased demand for services is Botox, a botulinum toxin type A injection. There has been an 845 percent jump in Botox injections between 2000 to 2018. Botox and other minimally invasive procedures have boomed because they work quickly, require less downtime, and don’t look as “done” as surgical treatments. “If you can get skin tightening benefits of noninvasive procedures, without having surgery why not?” Johnson said. That isn’t to say surgeries are not still popular. Breast implant augmentation procedures are still the No. 1 cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S., and other surgeries, such as the thigh-lift area also in demand. Still, advances in techniques and technologies have allowed even old-school surgical procedures to become less invasive. “Both the breast augmentation procedure has a natural counterpart performed with fat transfer Fat Transfer Natural Breast Augmentation, as does buttock enhancements with the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) Brazilian Butt-Lift,” Johnson said.
