How "awake" works here: you take an oral medication when you arrive, breathe nitrous oxide during the procedure, and Dr. Johnson numbs each area with tumescent local anesthesia. You stay awake, you can talk with him, and you go home the same day.

What is awake liposuction?

Awake liposuction removes stubborn fat through small openings in the skin while you stay awake. Instead of putting you to sleep, we combine three things: an oral medication at the start to help you relax, nitrous oxide during the procedure, and tumescent fluid that numbs the treatment area and reduces bleeding.

Because you are not under general anesthesia, you can change position when Dr. Johnson asks, tell him how you feel, and walk out with a driver the same day. The numbing fluid is one part of a combined approach; the oral medication and nitrous oxide are there so you stay relaxed and comfortable.

  • No general anesthesia and no breathing tube
  • Small cannulas through small openings
  • You can reposition and talk during the procedure
  • Done in our Dallas office, home the same day

Areas we treat and starting prices

Your price depends on how many areas you treat and how much fat is in each one. Dr. Johnson gives you an exact quote at your free consultation.

Full stomach

Upper, lower and side abdomen. $6,500–$9,500.

Love handles (flanks)

From $3,500.

Upper back

Bra-line and upper back rolls. From $3,500. Back liposuction.

Arms

From $3,500. Arm liposuction.

Underarm

$2,500.

Chin, thighs and other areas

Priced at your consultation.

Stomach, flanks and back together: some patients treat the whole midsection in one visit, which many people call "Lipo 360." Dr. Johnson will tell you whether that makes sense for your body and what it costs, or whether treating fewer areas gets you where you want to be.

What happens on procedure day

  1. Before the day. At your consultation, Dr. Johnson reviews your health history and current medications and tells you which ones to pause. You get written instructions and arrange a driver.
  2. When you arrive. You take an oral medication to help you relax.
  3. Numbing. You breathe nitrous oxide while Dr. Johnson places tumescent fluid in the treatment area. The fluid numbs the area and reduces bleeding.
  4. Fat removal. Dr. Johnson removes fat through small cannulas. You may feel pressure, pulling or vibration. You can turn when he asks and tell him how you are doing.
  5. Going home. You put on a compression garment, get your aftercare instructions and go home with your driver the same day.

Recovery after awake liposuction

Expect soreness, swelling and bruising in the treated areas for the first days. That is normal. You wear a compression garment as instructed.

  • Most patients go back to work in 2–5 days
  • Swelling goes down gradually over the following weeks
  • Your shape keeps improving over weeks to months as the swelling settles
  • Dr. Johnson sees you for follow-up visits during recovery

Is awake liposuction right for you?

You may be a good candidate if you are in good general health, close to a weight you can keep, and bothered by fat that does not respond to diet and exercise.

  • Stubborn fat on the stomach, flanks, back, arms, chin or thighs
  • Reasonably good skin tone in the area
  • Realistic expectations about shape, not scale weight

Honest expectations

Liposuction is not a weight-loss method, and it is still surgery. Possible effects include bruising, swelling, numbness, uneven contour, infection and fluid collection. Dr. Johnson goes over the risks that apply to you at your consultation.

If loose skin on the lower stomach is the main problem, liposuction alone may not be enough. Ask about the awake mini tummy tuck.

Awake liposuction FAQ

Does awake liposuction hurt?

You may feel pressure, pulling or vibration. The tumescent fluid numbs the treatment area, nitrous oxide and an oral medication help you relax, and because you are awake you can tell Dr. Johnson right away if a spot feels sore.

What anesthesia do you use for awake liposuction?

We use an oral medication at the start, nitrous oxide during the procedure and tumescent local anesthesia in the treatment area. There is no general anesthesia.

Who performs the procedure?

Dr. Bill Johnson, a board-certified physician, performs every awake liposuction at Innovations Medical himself. He has performed more than 6,000 since February 2007.

How soon can I go back to work?

Most patients go back to work in 2–5 days. Plan on soreness, swelling and bruising during the first days.

When will I see my results?

You will notice a change once the first swelling goes down, and your shape keeps improving over weeks to months as the swelling settles.

How much does awake liposuction cost in Dallas?

Full stomach is $6,500–$9,500. Love handles, upper back and arms start at $3,500 per area, and the underarm area is $2,500. You get an exact quote at your free consultation.

Do you offer financing or accept HSA and FSA?

Yes. Cosmetic surgery financing is available for up to 60 months, with 0% options, subject to credit approval. We also accept HSA and FSA cards.

Can I treat several areas at once?

Often, yes. Many patients combine the stomach, flanks and back in one visit. Dr. Johnson will tell you at your consultation what can be done safely in one session.
