Am I a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Treatment?

Am I a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Treatment

All across the country — and in every generation — people often have a constant battle to obtain what they consider to be an ideal figure. Others are happy with the contours of their body but would like to have a youthful appearance. And, there are many individuals who’ve like to reconstruct their breasts after a mastectomy. As a result, it’s common to start wondering about the possibility of cosmetic enhancements. What do they entail? And, are there any requirements for a person to be considered a good candidate?

What makes a person a good candidate for cosmetic procedures?

There are several things that are treatment-specific — such as having firm skin for liposuction or being done having children before getting a Mommy Makeover. However, there are other requirements that are common denominators across the board. These include:

1. Having Realistic Expectations

Cosmetic enhancements can significantly improve your looks. You can make yourself look younger, have a contoured figure, and/or regain your pre-baby shape. However, it’s crucial that you know exactly what the results would be, so that once the process is completed, you feel thrilled about your new look. It’s important to talk with your doctor about what you can expect. If your friend got a specific treatment, you won’t necessarily achieve the exact same results. At the end of the day, cosmetic enhancements are done to improve the way you look.

2. Being in Good Psychological Health

Cosmetic enhancements improve your physical appearance. This means that you can look and feel your best — giving your self-confidence a boost. However, it’s essential to have good psychological health and be emotionally stable prior to undergoing any procedure. Even the most ideal results will not resolve mental health issues such as depression.

3. Being in Good Overall Health

There are several healthcare conditions that can make cosmetic enhancements a high-risk endeavor. The most common include obesity, heart disease, lung disease, hypertension, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes. Some of the risks associated with these ailments include anesthesia complications, too much bleeding, a higher likelihood of infection, and improper wound healing. In addition to not having an underlying health condition, it’s essential to be at a stable, healthy weight — ideally, having a body mass index (BMI) below 30.

4. Being a Non-Smoker

Being a smoker — or consuming large amounts of alcohol — can place you at a higher risk of complications similar to the ones related to poor health conditions. Therefore, if you are a smoker or a heavy drinker, you should quit such lifestyle choices for four to six weeks before the cosmetic procedure. In addition, you should continue abstaining from smoking and drinking for four to six weeks after the procedure to ensure proper healing. Be aware that this includes refraining from using nicotine gum, chewing tobacco, smoking cigars, wearing nicotine patches, and using e-cigarettes.

5. Doing It for the Right Reasons

Cosmetic treatments should be all about you. What you want to do, what you know will make you feel better about yourself. This is not the type of situation you should feel pressured to do due to the expectations of third parties. It’s also something you should do if you have the resources to afford it.
