Q: What is a Mommy Makeover?

What is a Mommy Makeover?

“Mommy Makeover” is not a technical medical term, so it can really mean anything we want. The idea is procedures for women after childbirth to improve their appearance. The classic Mommy Maker is a tummy tuck procedure and breast implants. At Innovations Medical, we like to take a broader approach, a more natural approach. Not everyone needs a tummy tuck or even surgery. Women may want to change their look even if they haven’t had a baby recently. Our Mommy Makeover has lots of options, so we call it a Flexible Mommy Makeover.

Q: What is the Basic Mommy Makeover?

Basic Mommy Makeover

We start with the basic plan of liposuction and SmartLipo of the stomach and love handles. Added to that is natural breast augmentation (your own fat, not implants). You also have the option to have a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) if you prefer.

The right Mommy Makeover really should be customized for you. Our trained team can talk or meet with you and help you decide on the best plan for you.

Q: How to Get Rid of a Mommy Belly

One of the frequent questions we are asked is how to get rid of a mommy belly. We get this question in several forms:

  • How do I get rid of my baby belly?
  • How do I get rid of my mommy belly after a c-section?
  • How do I get rid of my mommy pooch or apron?
  • And even How do I get rid of my mummy tummy?

The easy answer is we can almost always make your mommy belly much better, but what we have to do to get there changes based on what your mommy belly looks like. We will talk about the most common of these procedures in this video. We’ll also add a little about stretch marks at the end.

How do I get rid of my mommy belly when it is just loose skin? You’ve lost all your weight from having your baby, but your skin is now loose or floppy. If you had a c-section, the scar is low but the skin folds a little bit over the top. For those with a small to moderate amount of looseness, Thermage is a great option.

Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to tighten the skin without surgery. Most patients see immediate results and improvement continues for up to a year. Thermage has no downtime and many patients repeat it every year or 2 to offset the effects of aging.

How do I get rid of my mommy belly, even if I haven’t lost all of my weight from pregnancy? When you still have some “baby weight” or your pregnancy has changed your body fat pattern, liposuction can be a great option for getting rid of a mommy belly. Even when there has been a c-section and the wound is uneven, liposuction can frequently flatten it out and restore a more attractive belly. We also use the SmartLipo laser which can tighten the skin as much as 30% beyond liposuction alone.

For those with a large amount of loose skin, a tummy tuck is the best option. With a tummy tuck, we remove the excess fat on the stomach using liposuction. We cut off the extra skin to make the abdomen flat and smooth in most cases. This works great with a c-section. Most of the time we are able to leave only a little longer scar than you had before. Depending on your belly, we may reposition the belly button or just pull in down a bit. An added advantage of a tummy tuck is all or most of your stretch marks will also be removed. There is a little more recovery, you can watch the Mommy Makeover Recovery video for more on that issue.

Speaking of stretch marks, what can we do for those? As I said, a tummy tuck removes all or most of the stretch marks. Other procedures can improve the appearance of stretch marks but they do not eliminate them. Of the available technologies, Thermage and resurfacing lasers are what we recommend. Thermage tends to shrink stretch marks and make them less noticeable. Our favorite laser for stretch marks is the fractional CO2 laser. This can really reduce their appearance over 1-3 treatments.

We have a lot more content and videos about Mommy Makeovers on our website and on Vimeo and YouTube. Feel free to view those or come to our office for a free consultation.

Q: Mommy Makeover Recovery - Thermage

We’re here at our Fort Worth office to tell you about recovery after a Mommy Makeover. We offer a Flexible Mommy Makeover, so the recovery varies depending on what you do for your Mommy Makeover. This video covers recovery for those with no extra fat but some loose skin and stretch marks.

Some women have loose skin and stretch marks and little else following childbirth. For these mothers, we often recommend Thermage or Legend for the loose skin and resurfacing lasers if necessary for the stretch marks.
Thermage is one treatment for skin tightening and therefore delivers a lot of energy. We prefer to sedate for Thermage, so you will need a driver. However, once the sedation wears off Thermage requires no recovery. Legend requires no sedation and has no recovery, but it does require 6 sessions.

We use several resurfacing lasers, but SmartXide CO2 laser is probably the best. You will have redness and perhaps a little swelling for a few days after a SmartXide on your stomach for stretch marks. You will also need to avoid sunshine or tanning on your stomach for at least a month.

Q: Mommy Makeover Recovery - Basic

We’re here at our Fort Worth office to tell you about recovery after a Mommy Makeover. We offer a Flexible Mommy Makeover, so the recovery varies depending on what you do for your Mommy Makeover.

This video will cover our basic Mommy Makeover, which consists of stomach and love handle liposuction with fat transfer to the breast or buttocks.

Most patients experience some swelling that lasts for 2 weeks to a couple of months. Bruising occurs in fewer than half of our patients and lasts for about 2 weeks. Most patients can have some soreness requiring more than Tylenol after a day or two is unusual. Drainage can occur for up to 3 days, but most patients stop draining by the morning after surgery. You can return to work the next day, but we prefer for you to take 2-3 days off if possible. We do want you to not exercise for 2 weeks.
Most patients tolerate this procedure very well and are able to return to near-normal activities after just a few days.
Natural breast or buttock augmentation has minimal recovery. You may have some minor swelling and bruising for a couple of weeks, but significant swelling or pain is unusual. It is important that you not lose any weight for 3 months to ensure maximum long term fat survival.

Q: Mommy Makeover Recovery - Classic

We’re here at our Fort Worth office to tell you about recovery after a Mommy Makeover. We offer a Flexible Mommy Makeover, so the recovery varies depending on what you do for your Mommy Makeover. This video covers the recovery from a classic Mommy Makeover which in our office is a tummy tuck and natural breast augmentation.

Recovery from a tummy tuck is not a lot different from recovery from stomach liposuction. You will have swelling for a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Bruising occurs on less than half of the patients and resolves in a couple of weeks. The major difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction are the drains after surgery and the restrictions on lifting. When you go home after a tummy tuck you will have drains for 5-7 days. It is possible for you to go to work at a desk with drains, but take a change of clothes if you do in case drainage occurs. We strongly advise you not to lift anything heavier than 5 lbs for 6 weeks after your tummy tuck.

Q: Mommy Makeover Recovery Extended Version

We want to talk about recovering from a Mommy Makeover. This is our extended video on the topic with a little more information and recommendations. We offer a Flexible Mommy Makeover, so the recovery varies depending on what you do for your Mommy Makeover.

With our Mommy Makeover you generally have three different levels of recovery depending on the procedures you have performed. If you do skin tightening procedures with no surgery, you have no recovery after the effects of any sedatives we use have worn off. This can take up to a few hours and rarely overnight. We will use this video to discuss recovery from liposuction, fat transfer, and tummy tucks.

You will need a few supplies:

  1. Compression garment
  2. Ice packs
  3. OTC pain meds like Tylenol or Advil
  4. Band-Aids
  5. Feminine maxi-pads if you are having a tummy tuck

We’ll go into all of these more in this video

One of the most important things you will need in your recovery is someone to stay with you during the first few hours after your procedure. You are safe to go home, but a little too sleepy to be alone. This will wear off in 5-6 hours, but someone should be with you until it does wear off.

After liposuction most patients experience some swelling that lasts for 2 weeks to a couple of months. Bruising occurs in fewer than half of our patients and lasts for about 2 weeks. Ice packs are the best way to help reduce swelling and bruising. Keep the ice pack on for 30 minutes then off for 30 minutes the first few days, as often as possible. The cold is an important thing, so any cold system will work. Igloo Max-cold Natural Ice available at Target and others is an inexpensive and convenient way to provide cold packs, but many patients use gel packs or even frozen vegetables for the cold source.

Most patients can have some soreness requiring more than Tylenol (acetaminophen) after a day or two is unusual. After the third day you may substitute Advil (ibuprofen) for the Tylenol if you desire. Drainage can occur for up to 3 days, but most patients stop draining by the morning after surgery.

Most patients tolerate this procedure very well and are able to return to near-normal activities after just a few days. You can return to work the next day, but we prefer for you to take 2-3 days off if possible. We do want you to not exercise for 2 weeks.

So to summarize: a sitter for the first few hours, a garment, OTC pain meds, ice packs, and band-aids are all you really need for your Mommy Makeover. Add feminine pads if you are having a tummy tuck. Take it easy for a few days, apply cold to the treatment area frequently, and wear your garment. All of this is included in the paperwork you will receive at your pre-operative evaluation.

Q: Mommy Makeover Supplies

We want to talk about the supplies you will need after a Mommy Makeover. We offer a Flexible Mommy Makeover, so the supplies needs vary depending on what you do for your Mommy Makeover. We will provide you with some of your supplies, but some you will need to provide yourself.

Our basic Mommy Makeover consists of stomach and love handle liposuction with fat transfer to the breast or buttocks. If you want, you can change the liposuction area to say arms, thighs or even neck, or you can add a liposuction area and not do a fat transfer. We will provide you with the bandages and tape for the wounds overnight. We will also provide a pad for your furniture to help avoid any problems from drainage.

One of the most important things you will need in your recovery is someone to stay with you during the first few hours after your procedure. You are safe to go home, but a little too sleepy to be alone. This will wear off in 5-6 hours, but someone should be with you until it does wear off.

You will need to supply a compression garment that you can purchase from us or before you arrive. Spanks work well for this purpose and are less expensive than what we can provide. The garment should fit snuggly BUT NOT be too tight. The purpose of the garment is comfort and to reduce swelling, so we don’t want it so tight it hurts. You will also want a supply of band-aids. We recommend you keep a band-aid on the wounds for 2 weeks unless the band-aid irritates your skin. If you have a tummy tuck, you will need a supply of pads to cover the drains. We will send you home with enough for the first day or two, but you can never have enough. Feminine maxi size pads work well for this purpose. We often cut them in half for a more comfortable shape.

Ice packs are the best way to help reduce swelling and bruising. Keep the ice pack on for 30 minutes then off for 30 minutes the first few days as often as possible. The cold is the important thing, so any cold system will work. Igloo Max-cold Natural Ice available at Target and others is an inexpensive and convenient way to provide cold packs.

Most patients do not require prescription pain medications after a day or two. However, it is helpful to Tylenol (acetaminophen)for occasional pain and at bedtime for a couple of weeks. You may substitute Advil (ibuprofen) after the 3rd day if you desire.

That’s about it, a sitter for the first few hours, a garment, OTC pain meds, ice packs, and band-aids are all you really need for your Mommy Makeover.
