When most people think about liposuction, what comes to mind are typically images of those who seek the procedure for cosmetic purposes. Whether it’s due to weight gain, wanting to regain a pre-childbirth silhouette, or the desire to achieve a more proportionate look, it all has to do with physical appearance. However, liposuction can also come in handy for medical purposes, such as for removing lipomas. But, what exactly are they? How can liposuction help? And, what’s the recovery time?
What are lipomas?
Lipomas are fatty tumors. They are clearly visible since they are located right underneath the skin. They feel like a doughy mass and usually show up in individuals who are middle-aged. Although unsightly, they are harmless. That being said, plenty of people opt to remove them either because they keep growing, cause pain, or simply because they don’t like how they look.
Typically, a person has several lipomas and they can show up anywhere on the body. The areas that are most common to have them include the arms, neck, shoulders, back, and/or thighs.
How can liposuction help remove lipomas?
Although lipomas are often removed through surgery, they can also be removed through liposuction. When opting for the latter, the procedure is completed as an outpatient procedure utilizing local anesthesia. Not only is removing lipomas through liposuction more beneficial — since it avoids surgical intervention and its related complications — it also minimizes scarring.
During the liposuction, your doctor will make a small incision and insert a thin tube called a cannula. This instrument is then moved back and forth to loosen the fatty tissue, which is then vacuumed out of the body through the cannula. This type of procedure can be performed for either a single or multiple lipomas.
Recovery Time After Lipoma Removal Using Liposuction
After removing lipomas, it’s common to experience soreness, swelling, and/or bruising. How long it will take to fully recover will depend on the size and number of lipomas removed. However, you may go back to work within a few days and resume your regular activities within a week or two. You will be provided with instructions by your physician to optimize the healing process.
Cost of Lipoma Removal Using Liposuction
The cost of lipoma removals will vary from one patient to the next. Factors to consider include how many fatty tumors need to be removed, as well as their size, location, and how deep within the body they are located. In addition, some people have lipomas removed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. Once you have completed an initial consultation, we will be able to provide you with an estimate based on your specific needs.
