Cosmetic enhancements are a wonderful resource to contour your body to a shape that makes you feel confident. One of the most popular procedures is breast augmentation. Whether you want to regain your pre-baby silhouette, seek a look that’s more proportionate to your body, or simply would love the look of bigger breasts, this enhancement option is appealing for many reasons. However, not all of them are the same. What’s the difference between a traditional breast lift versus a laser one? And, how do you know which one is the right option for you?
What is a traditional breast lift?
A traditional breast lift (mastopexy) is a procedure designed to correct sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. Together, these adjustments reshape the breast and provide it with an even, more attractive contouring. It’s also a good option for women whose nipples face downward — since lifting up the breast will correct this cosmetic issue.
Although this type of enhancement does improve the shape of the breasts, it’s different from a breast augmentation because it does not increase the size of the breasts. In fact, it is common for breast lift procedures to result in a smaller breast size.
Traditional breast lifts are conducted by doing three incisions on each breast — one around the nipple, a second one from the bottom outline of the nipple to the breast fold, and a third one along the breast fold. Once the incisions have been made, the breast can be reshaped and repositioned to a more youthful height.
Benefits of a Traditional Breast Lift
There are several benefits to getting a traditional breast lift. The most common ones include:
- Symmetrical, full breasts
- Boost in self-confidence
- Being able to forgo a bra
- Better body proportions
Recovery Time for a Traditional Breast Lift
After the procedure has been completed, your doctor will instruct you to wear a surgical support bra. It’s normal for your breasts to be swollen and bruised for up to two weeks. During this time, you’ll likely have to take pain medication, and you’ll have to follow instructions regarding showering, sleeping positions, and daily activity level. You’ll also have to refrain from having sex until you heal. Your medical provider will give you detailed instructions about what you can and can’t do and how long to wait to resume your regular routines.
In some instances, you may need drainage tubes near the incisions to take care of excess blood and fluids. As for the stitches, some of them dissolve on their own, while others require a follow-up visit to your doctor to get them removed. If they need to get removed, it will be done about two weeks after the procedure.
What is a laser breast lift?
A laser breast lift involves using high-powered laser beams to tighten breast tissue. The procedure works by emitting lasers directly into the breasts. The thermal heating first tightens the breast skin, then proceeds to tighten the internal breast tissues. This type of laser is safe and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Benefits of a Laser Breast Lift
The benefits of a laser breast lift are several. The most impressive ones include:
- Minimally invasive procedure
- Tiny scars
- Shorter recovery time — may leave some swelling and bruising afterward
Recovery Time for a Laser Breast Lift
Since a laser breast lift does not require surgery, you won’t have any required downtime after the procedure has been completed. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort and/or a tight feeling around their breasts. It’s also common to experience skin dryness soon afterward. These two symptoms will gradually disappear. In the meantime, you can use a moisturizer on your breasts.
Who’s an ideal candidate for a breast lift?
Breast lifts are great alternatives for women who’ve lost breast firmness. This issue is often the result of regular life events, such as:
- Breastfeeding
- Weight fluctuations
- Age
It’s also a good option for women who have naturally saggy breasts, their breasts are uneven, the size of the areolae looks disproportionate to the rest of the breasts, or if your nipples are facing the floor.
