When it comes to breasts, there are a lot of reasons why a person would favor a specific size over others. Some women want them to look bigger because they want to look more proportionate, regain their pre-breastfeeding figure, or think it would help with their self-confidence. On the other side of the spectrum are those who want to reduce the size for equally valid reasons — such as also wanting to look more proportionate, wanting to avoid unwarranted attention, or the heavy weight of their breasts are causing chronic pain and other discomforts. Whichever the reason, if you’re considering a breast reduction, you may be wondering about the available options. What’s the difference between traditional reductions and liposuction breast reductions?
Traditional Breast Reductions
Breast reduction surgery (also known as reduction mammaplasty) is a procedure that’s performed to remove excess fat and tissue from the breasts. The traditional method to do so involves general anesthesia, making incisions around the areola, then a vertical line from the areola to the base of the breasts, and finally, along the crease at the base of each breast. The doctor then removes the desired amount of fat the patient wants to eliminate. Once removed, the nipple is repositioned and the skin is stitched back together. The process can take up to three hours, and — depending on your circumstances — could be done as an outpatient procedure or you may need to stay in a hospital overnight.
Once the procedure has been completed, you’ll have to allow your body enough time to heal. This is approximately one week before you can return to work, and up to four weeks before resuming an exercise routine.
Benefits of Traditional Breast Reductions
- Eliminate chronic back/neck pain
- Boost your self-confidence
- Asymmetrical breasts
- Reduced or eliminated skin irritation under the breasts
- Being able to have a more active lifestyle
- Stretched areolas and/or large nipples can be reduced
Liposuction Breast Reductions
SmartLipo breast reductions are minimally-invasive procedures that are done under local anesthesia — meaning that you stay awake the entire time, with only a numbing agent on your breasts. This reduces the risk of complications and shortens the time you have to stay under medical supervision afterward.
The doctor uses a high-powered Smart Lipo Laser laser that melts fat while at the same time tightening the skin. The laser is inserted through small incisions around the breast — much smaller than those required in traditional breast reduction surgery, which also means minimal scarring. The entire procedure can be completed within two hours.
Benefits of Liposuction Breast Reductions
- Eliminate chronic back/neck pain
- Boost your self-confidence
- Asymmetrical breasts
- Reduced or eliminated skin irritation under the breasts
- Being able to have a more active lifestyle
- Minimal scarring
- Less loose skin
- Better nipple position
- Outpatient procedure
- A shorter recovery time
