In general, cosmetic procedures are not something you should rush into, and some procedures, such as the abdominoplasty, also known as the tummy tuck, require advanced planning, research, and post-op care. Understanding the ins and outs of the procedure before you go under the knife can help you have realistic expectations and a better recovery, which can help maximize your results.
How Far Out Should You Plan?
At a minimum, we suggest at least three to six months to prepare to have the tummy tuck procedure. Why? Six months allows you to get to (or maintain) your ideal weight and establish a plan for aftercare.
Of course, not all individuals may need this long, but overall, the better prepared you are for your procedure, the better off you will be in the long run.
5 Things You Should Do to Prepare for a Tummy Tuck
1. Hone Healthy Habits
Four to six months before your procedure, you should start thinking about your diet and exercise habits. We encourage all patients to eat a healthy diet, drink enough water, and exercise regularly before undergoing any cosmetic procedure. These actions help to make recovery faster for you. If you smoke, you should try to quit and will need to quit for at least two weeks before and after your tummy tuck. The same applies to alcohol consumption. Stopping these behaviors helps to facilitate healing and lower the risk of infection.
2. Stop Stressing
You probably already know that stress wreaks havoc on your body in general, but after surgery, stress can delay healing and leave you at risk of complications.
3. Make a List and Check It Twice
Three months out from your procedure, you should be crossing things off your to-do list, including scheduling any time off from work, setting up childcare and pet care, and arranging transportation and help during your recovery period. We also hope by now that you have completely quit smoking and that your diet and exercise routines are still on point.
4. One Month to Go
A month or so before your tummy tuck, take the time to stock up on supplies you may need for your recovery, such as:
- Extra pillows
- Gauze pads
- Comfortable clothing and underwear that are easy to put on
- Ice packs
- Over-the-counter medication and prescriptions given to you by Dr. Johnson
- Compression clothing required for your post-surgery recovery
- Snacks
- Meals to freeze and reheat later on
5. It’s Go Time
On the day of your procedure, be sure to dress comfortably and follow any pre-op orders given to you by Dr. Johnson. Take your medications as directed and rest as much as you can after your surgery.
