Cosmetic Surgery Recovery FAQs | Innovations Medical
Answers to your most common questions about garments, massage, sitting, swelling, sex, and supplements after cosmetic procedures.
Compression Garment Guidelines After Cosmetic Surgery
What kind of compression garment should I wear after surgery?
There is no garment proven to improve final results. However, compression garments are essential for comfort and swelling control for cosmetic surgery recovery including liposuction, Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), tummy tuck, or fat transfer.
Your compression garment should:
Be firm but not overly tight
Feel comfortable (not painful or overly restrictive)
Preferably include an open crotch for restroom use
Cover the entire treated area
Premium brands, boards, and fajas are acceptable—but:
💡 Compression garments do not improve your final results.
We recommend wearing your garment for cosmetic surgery recovery:
For the first 2 weeks after surgery, day and night
Up to 6 weeks total, based on comfort and swelling
Remove only when showering or laundering
After 2 weeks, swelling typically only returns with vigorous activity or exercise.
Massage and Movement After Cosmetic Procedures
Do I need massage after my procedure?
While many patients believe post-surgical massage helps healing, studies show no impact on final results.
Massage is optional for cosmetic surgery recovery
Avoid painful or aggressive techniques
Gentle lymphatic drainage may help comfort but is not required
Can I sit on my buttocks after a BBL?
Yes, sitting is safe—even after a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).
Move around and sit comfortably, as long as it isn’t painful
Sleep in any comfortable position, including your back
Do I need a sitting pillow after a BBL
We discourage sitting pillows. Most of them shift pressure rather than relieve it, potentially increasing pressure on the transferred fat.
Optimizing Recovery Through Lifestyle
Do I need to gain weight after fat transfer?
No. The goal is to maintain—not gain—your weight after fat transfer.
Avoid losing weight for the first 3 months (to protect fat survival)
Gaining weight won’t help survival and may diminish liposuction results
Keep your weight within 3–5 pounds of your pre-op weight
Can I sunbathe after my cosmetic procedure?
No. Avoid all forms of UV light, including sunlight and tanning beds, for at least 6 months post-surgery.
☀️ UV exposure can prevent or reverse skin tightening benefits from your procedure.
Managing Swelling and Activity After Surgery
How can I decrease swelling after my cosmetic procedure?
To reduce swelling during your cosmetic surgery recovery from liposuction or body sculpting:
Apply cold packs outside your compression garment during the first week
Use a 30-minutes-on, 30-minutes-off schedule
Wear your garment consistently
Get up and walk every hour while awake to promote lymphatic drainage
When can I start exercising again?
We recommend:
Waiting 2 full weeks before resuming physical activity
Avoiding early return to prevent swelling recurrence
Starting with light movement, increasing intensity gradually
Sex, Supplements & Recovery Optimization
When may I have sexual intercourse after my cosmetic procedure?
Sex is safe once all post-op drainage stops. We suggest:
Waiting 3–5 days
Avoiding positions or activities that cause discomfort
Are there any supplements that can help recovery or improve results?
Only one supplement has mild evidence:
Arnica montana: Begin 3 days before surgery and continue for 7 days. Here is an link to an arnica montana supplement we recommend: Amazon
Helps minimize bruising and swelling
No other supplements are proven to enhance your outcome or speed recovery.
