Fear is a funny thing. It can take control of our minds and make the smallest thing feel big and powerful. We know fear can be irrational, but that doesn’t make it any less real. And, when it comes to cosmetic procedures, even the most low-risk, non-invasive procedure can be intimidating when fear has taken hold. IV sedation helps mitigate your fears so you can stay calm and relaxed during any procedure. But, what is it? And, how does it work?
What is IV sedation?
Intravenous (IV) sedation refers to the administration of an anti-anxiety drug during your cosmetic procedure. IV sedation is administered through the bloodstream, so it’s quick and effective. Sedation is similar to anesthesia. But, rather than putting you to sleep, the sedative helps you relax and feel at peace.
How does IV sedation work?
Sedation is given through an IV placed in your blood vein. Depending on the procedure, the level of sedation may range from you feeling drowsy but able to talk to you not remembering the procedure. But, even with deep sedation, you won’t require a breathing tube or help breathing. This makes it a safer alternative to general anesthesia. At Innovations Medical, most procedures will have minimal sedation, if any. But, you can talk to our experts if you have concerns about the procedure and need stronger sedation.
Benefits of IV Sedation
Patients can request IV sedation for any number of reasons. While IV sedation for our cosmetic procedures is usually unnecessary, there are many benefits. The most common benefits — especially when compared to anesthesia — include:
- A higher level of safety
- Less incidence of postoperative nausea, vomiting, urinary retention, pulmonary complications, and malignant hyperthermia
- Faster reversal
- Less risk of blood clots and pulmonary emboli (blood clots that travel to the lungs)
- No sore throat after surgery (because it’s administered by IV and not an oral tube)
Ideal Candidates for IV Sedation
While any patient can request IV sedation for their procedure, not everyone is an ideal candidate. Some circumstances may prevent us from offering you IV sedation — such as being pregnant or having an allergic reaction to the solution. As such, the ideal candidates for IV sedation are those who:
- Are extremely nervous about their procedure
- Have a history of a traumatic cosmetic experience
- Are scheduled for extensive work
- Have difficulty staying still
- Are not pregnant
- Have not had previous problems with sedation
- Are not allergic to sedation
