Skin Care Tips

Great skin does not just happen – it takes effort. Do you look at your friends or favorite celebrities with envy over their flawless skin and wonder how they got it? Well, great skin doesn’t just happen – it requires a lot of nurturing and care over your lifetime. Here are tips to get healthy skin.

10 Skin Care Tips for Healthy Skin

1. Avoid the Sun

One of the best ways to get great skin for life is to protect it from the sun. Prolonged and frequent sun exposure can leave the skin with significant damage, such as age spots, freckles, wrinkles, and other problems. Prolonged sun exposure also increases your risk of developing skin cancer.

If you have to be in the sun, try to avoid the times of day when the sun is the strongest, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you can’t stay inside during peak sun times, cover your skin with long-sleeved shirts and pants., and wear a hat to protect your face.

2. Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen plays a protective role for your skin, keeping it safe from the damaging rays of the sun. Even during the winter, the sun’s rays can be damaging. The sun damages the skin by destroying collagen and elastin, two things necessary for your skin’s ability to expand and retract. When collagen and elastin break down, your skin begins to wrinkle and sag. Use a sunscreen with broad-spectrum blocking benefits and a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. For your face, we suggest a moisturizer-sunscreen combo. Apply every two hours or more frequently when swimming or sweating.

3. Don’t Smoke or Quit Smoking

Smoking wreaks havoc on your skin by depleting collagen, causing wrinkles, and making you look older. This damage happens because smoking destroys the collagen and elastin fibers in your skin that allow it to stretch and contract. Smoking also causes your blood vessels to constrict, which means your skin doesn’t get the oxygen and blood it needs to be healthy. Smoke from cigarettes also clogs your pores and can lead to blemishes.

E-cigarettes aren’t safe, either, as the vapor contains nicotine and other additives that can cling to your skin. Like the sun, smoking also increases the chances of skin cancer.

4. Moisturize

Dry winter air can zap the moisture out of your skin. Use a high-quality moisturizer with hyaluronic acid to keep your skin looking great.

5. Use Gentle Cleansing Products

Clean gently soaps and cleansers with warm water is the best for your skin. Strong cleansers and too-hot water temperatures strip the skin of its protective oils. After cleaning, apply a gentle moisturizer.

6. Establish a Skin Care Routine

One of the best ways you can keep your skin looking great is to establish a solid skincare routine by cleansing, restoring, and moisturizing your skin with high-quality cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers. Ask us for our recommendations about what products you should use and what you should avoid.

7. Eat a Healthy Diet

Your skin is no different from any other organ in your body; it needs vitamins and other nutrients to function correctly. Choose a healthy diet full of vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and whole grains to support your skin. Some people have skin conditions that require them to go a step further with their diet. For example, people who have rosacea should avoid processed food and gluten, minimize dairy, and avoid peanuts.

Adding vitamins and minerals on top of your healthy diet can help give your skin a boost, too. Vitamins and other anti-oxidant nutrients can help prevent cell damage and cancerous lesions and reduce stress on our skin caused by free radicals.

8. Stay Hydrated

Aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Drinking water hydrates your cells and plumps them up, keeping your face looking youthful. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Yes, we know this is hard, but both caffeine and alcohol dehydrate your body and skin cells. The result is your skin looks tired and dull, instead of bright and youthful appearance.

9. Reduce Your Stress

Stress wreaks havoc on all parts of your body – including your skin. Manage stress by getting enough sleep and making sure you take time to relax and exercise.
