Trimming the Fat: How tumescent liposuction can eliminate those stubborn love handles

You’ve put in the work at the gym, completely overhauled your diet and the numbers on the scale have slowly decreased. You’re stronger, healthier, and after months of dedication, you’ve hit your target weight. But while you’re feeling fit and (mostly) fabulous, all of those crunches and targeted ab workouts have done little to shrink the access fat on the sides of waistline. It’s a common problem Dr. Johnson sees with many of his patients. And while traditional liposuction has been a tried and true go-to for people looking to get rid of those pesky love handles, the procedure is becoming less and less attractive for people who are looking for something far less invasive. Traditional liposuction requires the patient to be put under general anesthesia, which comes with a range of risks. Tumescent liposuction, on the other hand, is a little different.

What is tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is a form of liposuction done under local anesthesia and mild sedation. Its name is derived from the Latin word “tumescens,” meaning “swollen,” and it refers to the manner in which the anesthesia is achieved: a special fluid is pumped into the surgical area until the area becomes firm or swollen.

The surgical area is determined during a consultation between the cosmetic physician and the patient. During the consultation, specific areas for fat extraction are identified. The first incision point is anesthetized using a local anesthetic, and the incision is made. The tumescent fluid is pumped in through the incision using tools designed for tumescent liposuction. After the area is numbed, the cosmetic physician uses specialized tumescent liposuction tools to tighten skin and remove fat.

What are the benefits of tumescent liposuction?

Perhaps one of the biggest perks to tumescent liposuction is that it doesn’t require general anesthesia. Instead, its performed using local anesthesia and mild sedation and is significantly safer than traditional liposuction techniques that require general anesthesia. General anesthesia has been linked to postoperative delirium, “a state of serious confusion and memory loss that sometimes follows anesthesia,” causing nightmares and hallucinations for some patients. In some cases, patients experiencing postoperative delirium took anywhere between six months to a year to recuperate. It’s also been associated with mental setbacks that may impact a patient’s memory and the ability to recall information. These lingering effects of general anesthesia can be cause for concern. In addition to forging the risks associated with general anesthesia, tumescent liposuction is often more affordable. By undergoing the procedure in the physician’s office, it lowers costs by eliminating the charges associated with a surgi-center, hospital or anesthesiologist. And these aren’t the only benefits. The procedure for the love handle area typically takes a mere 45 minutes to an hour, and the recovery time for tumescent liposuction is faster and less painful.
