Don’t Live with Stubborn Fat: Try Tumescent Liposuction

underarmModel and actress Chrissy Teigen recently admitted to having liposuction. It wasn’t an extremely surprising announcement, as many celebrities cop to having plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures. But where she had liposuction was surprising to many people.

She Got Lipo to Remove Fat from Where?

Teigen had liposuction to remove fat from her armpit. More specifically, she had the fat removed from the area between her breast and her arm. This area of fat is often referred to as baby fat, and is an area on the body that cannot be easily toned through exercise or diet. The fat in this area is extremely stubborn, so, for many people, liposuction is their only option for removal.

Liposuction is also ideal for treating other areas of stubborn fat, like those around the back and bra. The fat in these areas is very tough and can be hard to remove even with liposuction. This area, often called the bra bulge, can make many women feel self-conscious or embarrassed, especially in tight clothing.

“These areas of the body tend to hang on to stubborn fat-which is frustrating for many individuals, because no matter how hard they work to lose it, it just won’t go away,” Dr. Bill Johnson, M.D., said.

The body retain fat for many different reasons, including genetics, age and hormonal fluctuations, like those caused by menopause. Some patients also retain fat when they lose a significant amount of weight quickly.

“The body can hang on to fat as sort of an insurance policy for the future,” Johnson said. “Fat insulates the body, helps to cushion tissues and plays a role in energy production.”

Johnson is a Dallas, Texas, cosmetic physician who uses liposuction to remove areas of stubborn fat and sculpt the body.

Liposuction to Remove Stubborn Fat

Stubborn fat does not just happen in areas like the bra area and armpits, it can also happen around the midsection, too.

“When stubborn fat occurs around the midsection, we call it the ‘love handles’ or ‘muffin top’,” Johnson said.

This stubborn mid section fat can remain even after a patient has gone through significant weight loss-which can be frustrating for many people.

“Most patients that come in for liposuction have lost the weight and now want to have the curves and shapes they’ve worked hard for,” Johnson said.

Liposuction is becoming an increasingly popular, with over 235,000 liposuction procedures performed in 2016, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Don’t Just Choose Lipo, Choose Tumescent Lipo to Remove Stubborn Fat

Johnson treats more and more patients using SmartLipo tumescent liposuction each year. During tumescent liposuction, patients are not put under sedation but instead are numbed using a local anesthetic in combination with saline and other fluids. This mixture is pumped into the treatment area and patients are awake throughout their procedure.

The tumescent liposuction procedure is gaining in popularity because it delivers quick results that are quickly seen with minimal downtime. This means patients can return to normal activities quickly.

“Stubborn and hard to treat areas especially benefit from this additional skin tightening,” Johnson said.

Although patients who choose tumescent liposuction have an easier recovery than patients who go the traditional liposuction route, there are some post-procedure considerations to remember.

“There is bruising and swelling associated with the liposuction procedure, particularly if the fat being removed is stubborn and tough,” Johnson said.

After the procedure, patients will be required to wear a compression garment for a few weeks in order to help reduce excess fluid and swelling.

An additional benefit of SmartLipo is that the procedure triggers the body’s healing response to produce collagen and other healing elements in the treatment area. This added benefit tightens skin and improves final results.
