Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!

sunscreenSpring is finally here- although it has felt like summer lately! Warmer temperatures have North Texans heading to the lake, taking the top off of the Jeep, and spending more time outside. Before you head out the door, grab your sunscreen. Although it isn’t too hot just yet, the sun’s rays are powerful and damaging all year round. Dr. Johnson offers skin rejuvenating treatments to repair sun damaged skin, but you can help yourself and your skin by taking a few precautions.

If you spend time outdoors, you need sunscreen. Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with zinc oxide dioxide or titanium dioxide in it in order to block ultraviolet UVA and UVB rays, and make sure it has a Sun Protection Factor, also known as SPF, of at least 30. Use a higher SPF to protect your face, and if you wear makeup or wear moisturizer, boost your protection by grabbing one with sunscreen built in.

Wearing wide-brimmed hats will also protect your face, neck, and décolletage from damage, as well. If you’re going to be out working in the yard, consider a hat. If you’re going to be on the beach this spring or summer, bring along a beach umbrella for a place to escape the sun and heat.

If you must be in the sun, try to limit your exposure to the morning when the sun is not at full strength yet.

We all like the look of a tan, but a sun tan is really just a sign of damage. The sun’s rays increase the body’s production of melanin as a way to block out UVA rays. Melanin is your skin’s brown pigment, and when your skin is exposed to the sun, melanin floods the affected area and leaves you with a tan.

Melanin does not block damaging UVB rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun could leave you with freckles, sunspots, or melasma, a condition in which pigmentation becomes uneven, resulting in gray and brown patches on the face, neck, hands, and anywhere that has been exposed to the sun.

Dr. Johnson offers Fraxel laser and VI Peels to reduce damage caused the sun. Fraxel laser targets areas of sun damage, like sunspots, wrinkles, freckles, fine lines, and some types of melasma. VI Peel helps to erase fine lines, even out pigmentation, and renew the skin.
