Don’t Fall for DIY Cosmetic Devices

shutterstock_100769809According to the Plastic Surgery Channel, an online media site for consumers looking for news and information about cosmetic procedures, some people are saying no to plastic surgery and instead purchasing DIY cosmetic surgery devices online that promise slimmer noses, higher cheekbones and bigger backsides.

Products like nose-slimmers, double chin weights, smile trainers and breast-lifting machines can be purchased online from sites like Alibaba and Amazon for as low as $15.99.

Purchasers of these cosmetic devices hope to avoid the costs, risks and recovery time associated with cosmetic procedures. But while some of these cosmetic devices do yield results, these results are often very temporary, leaving patients full of frustration and out some money.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For example, you’re not going to get rid of a double chin by wearing chin weights – at least not anytime soon,” said Dr. Bill Johnson, M.D.

Johnson is a cosmetic physician with a clinic in Dallas, Texas.

“There are nonsurgical alternatives for cosmetic procedures for individuals looking to avoid the pain and long recovery period associated with cosmetic surgery,” Johnson said.

Unlike the DIY items sold online, these minimally invasive procedures deliver long-lasting results.

One such procedure is the Brazilian butt-lift. To perform the butt-lift procedure, Johnson takes fat from another area of the patient’s body using liposuction and injects it into the patient’s buttocks.

“The effect is twofold. First, the size of the buttocks increases. Second, the procedure causes the body to produce more collagen, which tightens the skin and lifts the butt,” Johnson said.

The results of the Brazilian butt-lift procedure are long-lasting, compared to outcomes of fast fixes like the vacuum butt-lift procedure that promises a bigger and better backside after minutes of vacuum suction applied to the buttocks.

“An additional benefit to the Brazilian butt-lift procedure is that the recovery period is much shorter than that of buttock implant surgery,” Johnson said.

Minimally invasive procedures like the Brazilian butt-lift have other perks. They are less painful, require small incisions and fewer stitches, and have a lower risk of infection.

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are increasing in popularity in the U.S., according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Of the 17.1 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2016, 15.4 million were minimally invasive.

Botulinum toxin A injectables such as Botox and Xeomin accounted for 7 million of these minimally invasive procedures. Soft tissue fillers designed to fill in fine lines and wrinkles totaled 2.6 million.

“These procedures are popular because they allow patients to target the signs of aging quickly. Results can be long-lasting, but they are not permanent, so if a patient doesn’t want to continue, they can just stop going to their doctor for treatment,” Johnson said.

Nonsurgical options are also available to women who want to increase the size of their breasts and give them a lift without going through traditional implant surgery.

“The natural breast augmentation procedure uses fat from another body area to increase the volume of the breasts. Like the Brazilian butt-lift procedure, there is also a skin-tightening benefits of the procedure that lifts the breasts,” Johnson said.

The natural breast augmentation procedure is ideal for individuals looking for a little more volume or to correct sagging caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss and aging.

The recovery from the natural breast augmentation procedure is significantly shorter than the six- to eight-week recovery time for traditional breast implant surgery.

“Most natural breast augmentation patients go back to work the next day after their procedure,” Johnson said.
