Fight Aging Overnight
How Can Sleeping Cause Wrinkles?
Sleeping, per se, does not cause wrinkles. Instead, it is how you sleep that leaves you at risk of lines and creases. When you sleep on your side or stomach, there is a force applied to your face. This force is also applied to the collagen in your skin and will eventually cause the breakdown of this important protein. When collagen breaks down, you're at risk of developing wrinkles, lines and sagging skin.
How Can You Prevent Wrinkles During Sleep?
The first way you can prevent wrinkles is to change sleeping position. Instead of sleeping on your side or stomach, switch to sleeping on your back.
Some people struggle with sleeping comfortably on their back, but there are special pillows available that can help keep you from turning over. Other pillows are specially contoured to take pressure off your face if you absolutely cannot sleep on your back.
Try a New Pillowcase
Consider switching to a silk or satin pillowcase. Why? These fabrics are smooth on your pillow and don't wrinkle up like cotton pillow coverings, so there is less risk of pressure or sleep lines on your skin.
Don't Forget Skin Care Before Sleep
Before you head to bed, make sure to clean and moisturize your skin with a night cream. We also suggest that you use products that contain retinol that will work overnight to protect your skin while you sleep. Retinol encourages the production of new skin cells and triggers the body to produce collagen.
Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is critical to your overall health and the health of your skin. Aim for seven to eight hours each night.
