Beyond Sunscreen

shutterstock_591147077

Sunscreen. It may seem like we talk about it a lot, but there's a good reason: Prolonged exposure increases your risk of developing skin cancer, and the sun's rays can damage your skin and cause premature aging. However, sunscreen is not always enough. Dr. Johnson offers five reasons you need to take the extra step beyond just sunscreen to protect your skin by wearing a hat and covering up when you can.

You Forget to Put It On. Forgetting to apply sunscreen happens to everyone, mainly because we are often rushing around getting everyone else ready and putting sunscreen on the kids and we end up forgetting to put sunscreen on ourselves.

You Skipped Reading the Directions. How long before you go out in the sun are you supposed to apply your sunscreen? How long until you need to reapply? If you don't know the answers to these questions, you probably have skipped reading the fine print on your sunscreen bottle. Or, you just forgot to reapply because time flies when you're having fun at the pool or the beach!

Spring Means Sunscreen

Spring Means Sunscreen

The weather has been beautiful lately, which means you have more than likely been outside working in the yard to beautify your garden or in the house cleaning up any last signs of winter. You may also be spending more time outside hiking on trails or at the soccer field or the baseball park as spring sports leagues get under way. Whatever you are doing outside, Dr. Johnson and the staff of Innovations Medical suggest you do it wearing sunscreen.

The Benefits of Sunscreen
The largest and most significant benefit of wearing sunscreen is that it helps to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. Sunscreen blocks out the sun's damaging UV rays that can lead to skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Dr. Johnson recommends that everyone wear a broad spectrum sunscreen year-round for protection.

Drinking Water Keeps Skin Looking Youthful

Drinking Water Keeps Skin Looking Youthful

Making sure you are drinking enough water every day contributes to good health. Water helps your body do everything from digesting the food you eat to eliminating waste and toxins. Water is also one of the best anti-aging treatments available and helps keep your skin looking healthy, youthful and bright.

What Happens to Your Skin If You Don't Drink Enough Water?
Water hydrates your skin cells and helps to give them their shape. So when you’re not drinking enough water, your skin can become dry, flaky and dull. Not drinking enough water also reduces the skin's ability to stretch and retract, which makes it more likely that you will develop wrinkles, fine lines and creases.

Collagen is Critical for Great Looking Skin

Collagen is Critical for Great Looking Skin

We talk a lot about collagen here at Innovations Medical. Many of the treatments we offer either contain collagen or promote collagen production for skin tightening benefits. In recent years, some people have taken to drinking bone broth in hopes that it will yield collagen boosting benefits and fight against aging. Some individuals are now turning to a new way to get their collagen- they’re putting this powdered protein in their coffee.

Collagen is a natural body protein responsible for giving the skin its structure and strength. Collagen is also a critical component of the skin cell regeneration process. It is also the most abundant protein in the body- with over 50 percent of it being found in the skin. Collagen production slows down as we age, leaving the skin without the support it needs and susceptible to wrinkles, sagging, and creases.

Claims that support the adding of collagen to foods and drinks boost ingesting it provides anti-aging benefits that beat out the benefits skin rejuvenating treatments. However, there is not much evidence to substantiate the claim that adding collagen to your cup of Joe or any other food for that matter is going to yield many benefits to the skin. Some collagen powder peddlers note that their claims are not substantiated by the FDA, and while studies conducted have shown a reduction in wrinkles in some individuals, research and testing have been limited.

More Seniors Choosing Cosmetic Procedures

More Seniors Choosing Cosmetic Procedures

Everyone has heard the saying about growing older gracefully. For most people, it simply means accepting that age is just a part of life – and accepting the things that come along with it. Things like gray hairs, laugh lines and wrinkles. For many older Americans, growing older gracefully means something else. It means fighting back the hands of time through cosmetic and other rejuvenating procedures to stay looking great. As a matter of fact, cosmetic procedures for older Americans are on the rise, according to recent statistics.

One of the most popular procedures for senior adults is the facelift. In fact, the number of facelifts performed on Americans over the age of 65 doubled between 2014 and 2015, according to the numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgery. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, also increased significantly in the age group of 55 and older, with almost 98,000 procedures performed in 2015. Other popular procedures include abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck, forehead lifts, and even butt lifts. Additionally, noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures such as dermal fillers, Botox, and laser skin rejuvenation have also proved to be leading options for this demographic.

Older Americans are turning to cosmetic procedures for a few reasons, says Dr. Bill Johnson, M.D., a cosmetic physician located in Dallas, Texas. Johnson treats patients of all ages but has seen an increase in the number of patients looking to reduce the signs of aging. "Many patients are looking to reduce creases, wrinkles and other signs that may communicate their age, or may make them appear older than they actually are." Many individuals in this stage of life are divorced or widowed, and want to regain their youthful visage in order to attract a mate, explains Johnson. "No one wants to be looked at negatively by a potential partner because they have an older appearance," he says.

Zap Your Arms into Shape!

Zap Your Arms into Shape!

You do push ups, curls, and triceps extensions. You bench press and dead lift. You work hard, built muscle, and have toned and tightened your physique. But you still have a trouble spot that refuses to be toned. For many women, this stubborn spot is their upper arms. Dr. Johnson is helping patients get their arms in shape by using Smart Lipo. If you covet the arms of Madonna or Michelle Obama, read on to learn why your arms are one of the hardest places to shape and how this liposuction procedure can help.

The upper arm area is traditionally hard to tone because of the amount of muscles found there. There are nine muscles that must be worked regularly and frequently to make a significant impact. While you can hit the gym and lift till you drop, you are probably not making the impact you think you are – which can become frustrating, especially when you see results in other places. Additionally, women are genetically predisposed to store fat in certain places, like hips, thighs, and you guessed it- upper arms.

Smart Lipo is a liposuction procedure that uses a laser to liquefy fat cells. The procedure requires a small incision into the target area on the arm, and a laser wand is inserted into the cut. The benefit of the Smart Lipo procedure over regular liposuction is decreased downtime and faster results. Patients also report less bruising and pain with laser assisted liposuction like Smart Lipo in comparison to traditional, or dumb, liposuction procedures. One final benefit is that Smart Lipo encourages the body to produce collagen in response to the procedure. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the body and is essential to the skin's quality and elasticity. This increased production of collagen helps to tighten loose and sagging skin which makes arms look better and more toned. The increase in collagen results in about 30% less loose skin after SmartLipo than traditional liposuction .This is a huge benefit to patients who have lost a lot of weight and still have stubborn fat and loose skin in the upper arms.

How Old Are Your Hands?

How Old Are Your Hands?

Everything about our bodies changes as we age. We know that skin quality is reduced as collagen decreases, and lines and wrinkles begin to appear. You know that various parts of the body, like the breasts and buttocks, begin to sag or droop. But did you know that your hands age, too? Your hands may be giving away your age, or actually making you appear older than you are. Dr. Johnson offers high-quality fat transfer procedures that can help improve the look of your hands – and hang on to your youthful appearance.

We may associate older looking hands with older people, but our hands really begin to age during our early twenties. While this isn’t exactly over the hill, the peak of your body’s fat quality occurs between eighteen and twenty. After that, fat stores begin to deplete with each year we age. Fat pads in our hands are already very thin, so when fat quantity starts to decrease our hands look bony. The bones, knuckles, and blood vessels of the hands are more easily seen – causing an aged appearance.

Hands also bear the brunt of a lot of our activity. Think about it. We use them for most everything we do. They’re often exposed to chemicals, hot and cold temperatures, and we usually forget about protecting them from the sun’s harmful rays. These actions and conditions can deplete your hand's of collagen and elastin, which ultimately affects your skin’s quality and contributes to your hands looking older. Our skin also just becomes thinner over time.

Pollogen Legend Procedure Skin Tightening Treatment

You hear a lot about the latest high tech cosmetic tools that can help you reduce wrinkles, tighten skin and smooth out cellulite, but you rarely see one in action. To make things a little clearer, Dr. Bill Johnson of Innovations Medical shares a new procedure that he’s doing on his patient Jennifer.

Legend tri-polar skin tightening procedure is done with a new device that uses radio frequency, which uses heat to do controlled damage so that you get tightening of the collagen in response to the heat. Our body builds an immune response and the tissue that is heated produces growth factor. They are chemical messengers that call in healing cells. That way, after the procedure is completed, Jennifer’s body will build a lot of new collagen, which will tighten and as it matures it’ll also give her long term tightening.

Can Sunscreen Prevent Skin Damage?

In 2012, new rules from the Food and Drug Administration took effect governing label information regarding sunscreen. Included in the new rules are defining the term “broad spectrum.” And so, it means sunscreen offers protection from both ultraviolet UVA and ultraviolet B – ultraviolet A and B – in proportional amounts. Before, sunscreens did not address UVA radiation which causes skin cancer and early aging, but not necessarily the tell-tale signs of sunburn.

Additionally, claims such as waterproof, sweat-proof sunblock are no longer allowed. Sonya Lunder, Senior Analyst at Environmental Working Group says, despite greater awareness of the damage sun can do and products with higher sun protection factors, melanoma rates are still increasing.
