Living with gynecomastia, or unwanted male breast tissue, can make many men feel embarrassed and isolated. It's not something many men want to discuss, either. However, did you know that nearly 70 percent of men experience gynecomastia in their lifetime? While many of these cases develop in middle age or later, younger men and even boys can also develop unwanted breast tissue. Whenever gynecomastia strikes, Dr. Johnson can remove it and help give you the masculine look you want.
Between 50 and 60 percent of teenage and pre-teen boys develop unwanted male breast tissue due to the hormonal fluctuations of puberty when estrogen levels are high. There have also been studies that link the development of unwanted male breast tissue in adolescents to exposure to phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) found in personal care products such as shampoo and body wash. Hormone levels become more balanced over time, and most men develop a more masculine appearance in their early 20s.
Cosmetic surgery is not just popular among women, according to a recent article from Allure magazine.
While historically most cosmetic surgery patients have been women, the number of men seeking out cosmetic and aesthetic procedures is on the rise.
According to a study by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 31 percent of men were "extremely likely" to consider a cosmetic procedure.
The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure gaining popularity for men, especially those who have experienced a significant weight loss. The tummy tuck is an ideal procedure for patients who may have a pannus or large apron of skin and tissue that remains and hangs down over the abdomen after losing a large amount of weight. Dr. Johnson performs an "awake" tummy tuck procedure that uses local anesthesia via tumescent fluid to numb the area of the procedure versus general anesthesia of traditional liposuction. This allows patients to have an easier, and faster, recovery period, which is something men look for in a procedure – it allows them to return to their regular routine and work much faster than older liposuction methods.
Gynecomastia, commonly known enlarged male breast tissue, is a condition that affects one-third to one-half of men between the ages of 25 and 45 in the United States. Gynecomastia is a condition that is often embarrassing for many men. It is also often very frustrating as well because many of its sufferers are not sure why or how they have developed the condition, or how to get rid of it. There are several causes of gynecomastia, including hormonal changes, the use of some medications, and health conditions like hypogonadism, also known as low testosterone that trigger breast development. There is another potential cause of gynecomastia that is under the microscope - exposure to THC, the main chemical compound of marijuana.
According to studies performed by National Institute of Health, recent studies have shown a link between THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, and the development of enlarged male breast tissue. This is because THC lowers testosterone levels. When a man’s testosterone level is lower than his level of estrogen, the breast tissue begins to grow. Low testosterone can also lead to low sex drive, a reduction in sperm count and erectile dysfunction. Exposure to THC from consistent marijuana use reduces the size of the testicles and also may cause sperm abnormalities. Using marijuana frequently during the teenage years has also been shown to delay puberty, a situation that occurs in over 60 percent of teenage boys.
Formal studies on THC and gynecomastia have not been performed in humans, but research performed on animals has indeed shown a link between the compound and a decrease in testosterone, reduction in testicle size and sperm abnormalities in animals. Additionally, physicians in states where marijuana has been legalized have heard more complaints about gynecomastia in their male patients than in the years before the states legalized the drug.
Men living with male breasts, or "moobs" as they’re more commonly known, benefit significantly from breast reduction surgery. Enlarged male breasts, or in medical terms, gynecomastia, occurs more commonly than most people think. The condition affects up to 50% of men in the United States. Even celebrity Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson admitted to having corrective surgery for the condition in 2005. Men with gynecomastia often feel self-conscious about their chest, causing them to avoid certain activities where their chest might be exposed. At Innovations Medical, Dr. Bill Johnson has a safe and effective solution for patients with "moobs." As a cosmetic physician, he recommends a male breast reduction as a way to nix "moobs" once and for all.
Our Approach to Male Breast Reduction
While losing weight and adhering to a healthy diet can reduce the appearance of male breasts in some patients, it rarely fixes the problem in its entirety. Our practice utilizes a unique combination of SmartLipo andVibration Assisted Liposuction (Vibro or Tickle Liposuction) for male breast reduction. As the first physician in Texas to offer SmartLipo and the first physician in the United States to offer Vibro Lipo, Dr. Bill Johnson offers patients a high level of expertise coupled with these effective forms of liposuction to achieve optimal results. This treatment encourages a natural response in the body triggering the formation of new collagen. This process creates exceptional skin tightening and eliminates drooping and sagging skin. Vibro Lipo, on the other hand, breaks up and removes fatty tissue, and is especially effective at removing fat from around breast tissue to achieve a flat appearance. Dr. Johnson performs the procedure in roughly 45 minutes in our office while the patient is awake.

One of the main concerns for the guys is the abdomen area and love handles. It can be hard to get rid of the extra fat on that area and that’s why liposuction is still the best and most efficient treatment.

After the Superbowl it's time to turn our thoughts to Valentine’s Day. What can you give that special guy to help him get back in shape after hanging out on the couch for so long? We really want him to look younger and liposuction can help. To improve a guy’s stomach and love handles the gold standard really is liposuction for shaping and flattening these areas. Another area that men are usually concerned about is the breast area. Liposuction is becoming the first line of defense in reducing the size of male breasts.
Many men are very reluctant to do liposuction under general anesthesia. They are more willing to do it under a local anesthesia where they are awake, can walk out after the procedure and feel more comfortable and in control. A typical procedure on the stomach and love handles using local anesthesia takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half, and most men can be back on the job in one to two days, unless they work at a very physical job. Some initial results may be seen in four to six weeks as the swelling goes down, but you will really see the final results in about six months as skin tightening happens.
