The Mask of Pregnancy: Melasma and Its Effect on the Skin

The Mask of Pregnancy: Melasma and Its Effect on the Skin

The skin condition melasma is a hyper pigmentation skin disorder impacting over 5 million Americans, according to the International Dermal Institute. Melasma was brought into the spotlight earlier this year when ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee revealed that she has melasma during a segment on Good Morning, America.

The disorder affects women more frequently than men; the American Academy of Dermatology estimates that just 10 percent of melasma sufferers are men.

Zee developed the skin condition while pregnant with her son. Melasma is a common skin problem that causes the skin to develop gray or brown patches. The condition is brought on by prolonged sun exposure or changes in hormones brought on by pregnancy, menopause and the use of birth control and is often referred to as the mask of pregnancy.

Don't Skimp on Skin Care

Don't Skimp on Skin Care

A British woman found out that cheaper isn’t always better, especially when it comes to getting dermal fillers. The woman took advantage of an offer for discount lip injections advertised on social media by an unregulated and unlicensed salon and ended up with serious complications. While we know everyone loves a bargain, injectables and skin care are not where you want to go cheap. Dr. Johnson is a board-certified physician licensed to perform high-quality cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, and although they may cost a little more, they are worth every penny.

A facial or skin rejuvenating treatment at your neighborhood salon or a friend’s at-home spa party can be tempting. But while these options may seem fun, convenient or less expensive at the time, you may end up paying more in the end. Letting a friend of a friend of a friend who watched her cousin do skin treatments once is not a good idea. You could be putting your skin in the hands of people who have no business touching it.

If the person performing your procedure is unlicensed and lacks the proper training or experience to do your chemical peel, microdermabrasion, laser skin procedure or any other cosmetic procedure, you could end up with serious damage like scarring or hyperpigmentation. This damage may be costly to fix, or may not be fixable at all. Using only licensed providers trained in skin care procedures protects you from the risk of irreversible skin damage.

Cancel Out Chest Wrinkles

Cancel Out Chest Wrinkles

hich means it is susceptible to sun damage, creasing and sagging. Dr. Johnson uses Clear and Brilliant laser therapy to treat the delicate décolletage to erase signs of aging and give you great-looking skin.

What Causes Chest Wrinkles?
The combination of the thin skin and the lack of fat in the upper chest area leaves the skin at risk of developing wrinkles and becoming slack. This usually happens around age 40, which unfortunately seems to be the same time many other signs of aging show up, too.

Is Liposuction A Long-Term Option?

Is Liposuction A Long-Term Option?
Some of the most popular questions we get at Innovations Medical are about liposuction. Questions about what makes a good candidate for the liposuction procedure, details about the procedure itself, and what patients should expect during the recovery period. One of the most popular questions we get from patients is "Are the results of liposuction long lasting?". Dr. Johnson performs SmartLipo liposuction on many patients and assures them that the results of their procedure are indeed going to last.

Liposuction is not a weight loss tool, rather it is a way to re-sculpt and reshape the body. Many liposuction patients opt to have the procedure after significant weight loss, to remove stubborn fat that just won’t budge with diet and exercise. After liposuction, patients will see a new, shapelier physique. Patients can expect that their new shape will be fairly permanent - with some conditions.

Because liposuction removes fat cells permanently, the removed cells cannot come back. This does not mean, however, fat cannot return with enough weight gain. A small number of fat cells are always left during liposuction to protect the skin. These cells can grow substantially if weight gain of more than 15-20 lbs occurs and result in some loss of shape in the area of liposuction. Patients who gain a small amount of weight after the procedure may see an increase in the size of their shape, but will retain their shape – their existing fat cells will simply get larger with weight gain.

Trending Now: Local Anesthesia for Surgical Procedures

Trending Now: Local Anesthesia for Surgical Procedures

Patients in need of surgical procedures are seeking are opting for local anesthesia at a rate higher than ever, according to the New York Times.

Why Some Patients Prefer Local AnesthesiaLocal anesthesia allows patients to stay awake during surgery, which translates into less post-op nausea and shorter recovery periods for most individuals. For some people, general anesthesia causes bothersome or uncomfortable side effects, like extreme sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, chills and confusion.

Other patients have more serious effects such as delirium, cognitive dysfunction and malignant hypothermia, a very serious and potentially fatal inherited health condition that causes fever and severe muscle contractions.

The Price You Pay: How Illegal Cosmetic Procedures are Taking Lives

The Price You Pay: How Illegal Cosmetic Procedures are Taking Lives

CBS News reported that a Dallas, Texas, a woman was recently convicted of the 2015 murder of another woman after she illegally injected silicone into the victim’s buttocks during an illegal cosmetic buttock enhancement procedure.

The patient receiving the injections hoped to enhance the size and shape of her buttocks, and had been a regular visitor for silicone injections. She died when the injected silicone entered a blood vessel, traveled through her bloodstream poisoning her. The silicone eventually blocked one of her lungs reducing oxygen her intake, causing her to suffocate.

The woman administering the silicone injection was unlicensed to practice medicine or cosmetic procedures in Texas. She practiced out of a Dallas warehouse, and reportedly sealed injection sites with glue and cotton balls.

The Battle for Your Best Arms

The Battle for Your Best Arms

Many patients research body sculpting procedures like liposuction after reaching their weight loss goals. This is because some areas of the body, like the upper arms, are hard to tone and tighten, despite weightlifting, exercise or diet. For many years, the regular course of treatment for this stubborn area has been the Brachioplasty, or arm lift, surgical procedure, but many patients now turn to liposuction to resculpt this area instead.

Excess skin and sagging tissue in the upper arms is often a byproduct of significant weight loss and makes some patients feel self-conscious about their appearance. As a result, arm resculpting procedures are in the top five most desired surgeries for patients who have lost a large amount of weight. The condition also occurs in some patients as a result of aging or genetics. This excess skin and tissue is often referred to as "wings" and may lead to health complications like rashes or skin infections if there is a large amount of excess tissue.

Traditional treatments involve the surgical excision of excess skin and fat. The patient is put under general anesthesia, and then a large incision is made, often running from the underarm area to just above the elbow. Fat pockets are removed or reduced. In some cases, patients have arm tissue sutured together in an effort to sculpt the area further. Skin is pulled up and tightened, and the incision is closed.

Zap Your Arms into Shape!

Zap Your Arms into Shape!

You do push ups, curls, and triceps extensions. You bench press and dead lift. You work hard, built muscle, and have toned and tightened your physique. But you still have a trouble spot that refuses to be toned. For many women, this stubborn spot is their upper arms. Dr. Johnson is helping patients get their arms in shape by using Smart Lipo. If you covet the arms of Madonna or Michelle Obama, read on to learn why your arms are one of the hardest places to shape and how this liposuction procedure can help.

The upper arm area is traditionally hard to tone because of the amount of muscles found there. There are nine muscles that must be worked regularly and frequently to make a significant impact. While you can hit the gym and lift till you drop, you are probably not making the impact you think you are – which can become frustrating, especially when you see results in other places. Additionally, women are genetically predisposed to store fat in certain places, like hips, thighs, and you guessed it- upper arms.

Smart Lipo is a liposuction procedure that uses a laser to liquefy fat cells. The procedure requires a small incision into the target area on the arm, and a laser wand is inserted into the cut. The benefit of the Smart Lipo procedure over regular liposuction is decreased downtime and faster results. Patients also report less bruising and pain with laser assisted liposuction like Smart Lipo in comparison to traditional, or dumb, liposuction procedures. One final benefit is that Smart Lipo encourages the body to produce collagen in response to the procedure. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the body and is essential to the skin's quality and elasticity. This increased production of collagen helps to tighten loose and sagging skin which makes arms look better and more toned. The increase in collagen results in about 30% less loose skin after SmartLipo than traditional liposuction .This is a huge benefit to patients who have lost a lot of weight and still have stubborn fat and loose skin in the upper arms.

How to Fix Botched Plastic Surgery With Safe Cosmetic Procedures

Sometimes, plastic surgery procedures don’t go as planned. Many times, people don't want to consider going through another procedure because they might end up getting more botched plastic surgery. However, Innovations Medical has advanced cosmetic procedures that can fix many of these issues. Some of the most common problems that Dr. Johnson encounters are rippling, not getting enough shape after liposuction, depression and loose skin.

For folks wanting to smooth out problem areas, powerful tools can be used. Addressing these problem areas a second time can be quite a challenge since the areas are more fibrous. Its also difficult to do the second time around. With rippling, this happens after abdominal liposuction. There may even be uneven areas – high and low spots. Vibration-assisted liposuction will make the area smoother. The movement of the cannula makes it possible to remove fat in a faster way, allowing the tissue to have fewer traumas. This results in a better and smoother outcome.
